« Im the same way that the suburbs were once inaccessible to the poor, in the near future, American cities will become gilded jewel boxes, and the exodus of the poor to the suburbs will continue unchecked. That is until, the rent gaps in cities become too small to make gentrification profitable and a new form of spatial filtering begins »

critics of gentrification are not proposing we don’t improve poorer neighborhoods, we absolutely should (AKA add new public transport, bike lanes, plant trees, or add a new coffee shop). instead we need a land use system that keeps some land affordable for the poor.

- the problem with gentrification is that everywhere outside of the gentrified is forgotten. Young rich white people act as pollinators; where they go, investors, attention, and money follow. This leaves poor people of color who have lived in the city their whole lives, left on the outskirts without updated infrastructure, transportation, or funding

- Reagan cut HUD’s budget by 40 percent in his second term, and the trend of less federal spending on critical housing/city infrastructure has only continued.
- this has forced cities to become « entrepreneur » minded, trying to attract companies, billionaires, and young people to move to their city. -> gentrification
