My once monolithic perception of the Malay ethnicity is now a dizzying array of migrations encompassing much of the Indonesian archipelago, religious persecutions (the Padri war and Minangkabau egress of Sumatra), and assimilation of, to name a few: Bugis, Minangkabau, Javanese, Acehnese, Sunda, Riau, that are now considered Malay.
