I know I’m missing lots of intricate details because the text is a bit too victorian english for me

It is almost reminiscent of Secret History, or rather Secret history is somewhat similar to The good soldier in that they are both about a man who cannot quite attain a true membership in a group of “high society” and he lies to himself about their disposition.
Am i making an obvious observation?
