The author is quoting the judge's statement to the juror pool as "The State must provde these charges beyond a shadow of a doubt." If the judge said that, it was incorrect. More likely, the author has incorrectly quoted the judge. The burden of proof is beyond a *reasonable* doubt, not a shadow of a doubt. I was a juror on a murder trial and the judge spent 30 minutes explaining exactly what that meant.
