I find the whittling people's (Mud-Dwellers?) gender dynamics uncomfortable.

When I'm visualizing scenes in this book, I can only picture them as an old animated movie. But not like classic Disney-style, more like those oddball 80s dark fantasy movies with rotoscoping and painted backgrounds that traumatized millennials when they were kids. Good stuff.
