Ok not loving how this book treats women (why are we calling them slaves) but I did enjoy the depiction of the 1906 famine. A very interesting perspective I don’t think I’ve read specifically before. The introduction of foreigners is interesting since Buck was a foreigner, I assume she will have bias towards them.

Wait is the wife implying he saved her from slavery? That is certainly an interesting perspective on the whole thing. Like she can’t leave her husband right? And she didn’t have a choice in the matter? But I think the text is saying neither of those things matter at this time, what she has is progressive for her. Interesting.

Reading this for a book club against my will. One chapter in and it’s ripe with misogyny. We will see if it has any real conversation about how this woman is being treated as property, but I’m doubtful.
