In some ways, an allegory to the prison industrial complex - success while incarcerated does not equal reward, because you survived in conditions that are insurmountable and thereby proved them. Returning to “normal” after that would make anyone go mad, as did the Hunger Artist trying to adapt to modern times and whims. The onlookers represent the layperson who sees atrocities and ignores them.
