Chapter 2 begins with how the boys family/community died and what came to be afterwards. This gives way more context to chapter one. Still grieving the poor hopeful young boy, whose memory gets passed on through the orb.

Not where I thought this book was going. Nearly DNF’ed at the end of chapter one. Really thought it was going to be about a boy, and his new journey with his found family companion (the orb-turned wolf after replacing his original wolf friend Joan). Incredibly sad and bereft.

The implication everyone else has moved on ‘to a better place’ —heaven? Or migrated to a new place with modern invention, inhabitants and produce like fruit. The importance of reciprocal companionship,
finding (confidence) in oneself, hope, feelings of loneliness whilst not being alone and a strong, longing desire to be remembered after one’s passing.
