Status Updates From 宝石の国 8 [Houseki no Kuni 8] ...

Phos said that they can’t come back after this. It is stressing me out so much. I love this story so so much.

I only saw six gems at the Cape of Emptiness (which is a very cool name): Alexi, Benito, Amethyst 33, Yellow, Dia and Cairngorm. What was that shot at the end with Padparadscha? I wonder if that is it or there are others who are on their way. I expected Cinnabar to refuse but her reasoning is interesting. So the Lunarians can come at night they just choose not to. Interesting!

Dia, Yellow, Rutile, Alexi, Sphene, Peridot, Red Beryl, Benito, Amethyst 33, and maybe Cinnabar? That would be ten. Eleven with Phos. I don’t know about that. What if it’s a trap. Rutile is essential if they capture them on the moon then the rest of the gems are screwed. I really don’t know how to feel about this. And it is interesting that Euclase is suspicious about the whole thing.

Keeping Cinnabar for last is interesting. I can’t predict what they’ll choose. I feel like Cinnabar won’t go but will want.

Yellow Diamond and Dia are already on board (I had a feeling that they would) and like Phos said: Alexi, Sphene and Peridot too are likely to come. Red Beryl is curious about the lunar fashion and Benito is also curious about the moon. To get even half is quite something. But why on earth are the Lunarians back already! I do not like it.

It’s cool that Rutile has noticed the eye and its material immediately. I feel bad for Alexi, I never saw that gem this angry before.

Phos has changed a lot! It’s a bit scary. Why is sensei so nonchalant about the whole thing? It’s quite unsettling. Sensei likely knows about the camera in Phos’s eye right? But why just go on like nothing happened? I don’t get it. It’s interesting that Phos has started with Rutile, using Padparadscha is smart but also a bit manipulative. It’ll ensure that Rutile is in I guess.

I hate the fact that this might give the others hope that other gems might return. I wonder what story Phos will use. They have to move very carefully. And I honestly don’t know how this will work.

I’m so glad that Phos doesn’t trust Aechmea and the Lunarians. And that they’re thinking long-term (getting the Lunarian’s technology to build everyone back from sand and to remove the toxins from Cinnabar). I don’t know if Kongō Sensei had noticed the synthetic pearl eye or not but I don’t like it. This whole thing feels very dangerous. It made me emotional seeing everyone again! I missed them so much!

I did not expect Phos to return too soon. And I do not like this plan. I’m pretty sure no one will agree to it and of course they’ll have their suspicions. No one has ever been back from the moon. I don’t know I’m scared. And now the Prince or Aechmea has replaced one of Phos’s eyes with a synthetic pearl one that I’m assuming has a camera inside? I don’t like this at all.

And how to separate all that powder from each other, it near impossible if not outright impossible. And kongō sensei is made out of pure artificial hexagonal diamond by the doctor. Interesting.

It is also interesting that they’d tried to convince the gems they kidnapped to work with them and that almost everyone one of them either self-destructed or lost their mind. It is crazy that all the gems that were brought back were synthetic. This feels very disappointing! But can they be reconstructed though? I recall Rutile saying something about it being possible but very hard to do.

What a heavy burden Phos must carry! Nothing is like they’d expected. That room overlooking the earth looks quite lonely. Hearing all the things that they’d tried to provoke Kongō sensei makes me wonder why he’d never just done it and let them rest in peace. Is he afraid that the gems would leave him? That they’d go insane when they have no purpose? What is it?

So if the machine (i.e. sensei) started working then (presumably) the gems will be left alone. Interesting!

“Originally it was created from a sentimental standpoint, to prevent the last human from feeling lonely.” I hope that we’ll get to see this flashback someday. I have a feeling that the last human is “the doctor”.

The Alternate Universe, which only the purest spirits can reach. To remove all the impurities the spirit requires the prayer of a separate human (quality irrelevant) and that machine (A.kK.A. Sensei) was created to help them. But how can that be if sensei is not a human? I have so many questions. But then sensei stopped working correctly. And all the kidnappings were attempts to make him work again.

I love the title of this chapter (A Machine for Prayer) it’s so beautiful. And my brain is hurting. After the humans die their flesh and bone decompose and is absorbed through the earth, but the spirit is ejected from the body and then broken down into the purest elements of the spirit which continues through space until it arrives at a certain point in the universe and from there it is absorbed into a realm called

So all the gems that were taken to the moon were turned to dust. This is pure evil what the hell! And the fact that they don’t die/disappear even after being slashed in half is quite concerning. Will Phos ever be able to come back? I’m so scared.

I love this cover! And Phos is so elegant! The character introductions is quite interesting. Red Beryl was partnered with Aquamarine who I’m guessing we’re taken to the moon. And Yellow Diamond “apparently can’t forget certain things despite a strong desire to.” They remember! I have faith in Yellow! I can’t wait to see.
