Hope & Love
All winter
the blue heron
slept among the horses.
I don’t know
the custom of herons,
do not know
if the solitary habit
is their way,
or if he listened for
some missing one-
not knowing even
that was what he did-
in the blowing
sounds in the dark.
I know that
hope is the hardest
love we carry.
He slept
with his long neck
folded, like a letter
put away.

Abundant Heart
Because the pelicans circle and dive, the fish
Because the cows are fat, the rains
Because the tree is heavy with pears, the earth
Because the woman grows thin, the heart

Still sipping this book, a few poems every few days, once a week, once every couple of weeks. Whenever I know I am receptive to subtlety. I feel like I've become, if not a friend, a neighbor to Hirshfield.
