Over halfway through this book now, and NOTHING has happened. The book features numerous scenes of: sandwich making & eating, cookie snacking, pizza munching, water being poured into glasses and consumed, Kool-Aid sticking to fingers, ice cream bars being eaten. Plus mentions of basic honeybee biology, the importance of organic farming, and numerous mundane details of birthday presents & birthday cards. **sigh**

This book feels like a lot of work to read. So many characters to keep track of. All the family members, now there is a friend named Sadie, and a weird uncle and a dog. Information is repeated. Why does this book have to be 268 pages long? With so many characters? I feel like middle grade fiction should be easier to read than this. Or maybe Harry Potter just spoiled me too much.

Came *super* close to putting this down right at page 25, when something finally begins to happen. It still felt like this book took way too long to get rolling. The main character, Jason, has some cool stuff going on with his body, but nothing is made of these brief flashes of color and heat in his hands. The story just plods along with the mom's disappearance, and the family's move to a small town.
