The sheep go to the pub to take part in a contest so they can get closer to humans and expose Beth, and Fosco entertains the crowd by drinking Guinness. Mopple freezes when he sees the butcher in the audience, disrupting their plan. The chapter also introduces Officer Holmes, a discouraged policeman drinking at the pub and reflecting on his stalled career.

A man arrives to collect drugs, money, and files, revealing that George was involved in trafficking and used the sheep to move contraband; Rebecca negotiates her way out of the operation. Lily later admits she was with George on his last day before he left to the pub & fears blame without her receipt. After a strange dream, Mopple becomes convinced she knows who killed George, though the answer is still withheld.

The will reveals that Gabriel and Rebecca wanted control of the sheep and the caravan, but the sheep choose Rebecca, angering Gabriel. Beth tells Rebecca that McCarthy was secretly buying land to build a slaughterhouse, which explains why Gabriel, Tom, and Harry may have wanted him stopped. Ham admits his fear and guilt as a butcher and his feelings for Kate, while the priest -married to Hams sister- confesses to lusting after his neighbor’s wife. The sheep spy on them and flee, concluding that humans r easily frightened and ruled by their guilt.
