...la luz escoge una inesperada parte del paisaje para adornarla de oro y luego las sombras lo barren. Sabes que estás viva. Das grandes zancadas intentando sentir la curvatura del planeta bajo tus pies.

I tried - numerous times - but this book beat me. It's a total DNF. The minutiae was just too boring.

Pretty cool. Some of Dillard’s extended metaphors feel like she’s showing off. However, given that she is in a new unfamiliar place, it makes sense that she would use devices which combine the unfamiliar with the more familiar.
Lots of wonderful paradoxes of paying attention (when to hold on and when to let go), and the comical observation here and there.

“Beauty itself is the language to which we have no key; it is the mute cypher, the cryptogram, the uncracked, unbroken code. And it could be that for beauty… that there is no key, that “oui” will never make sense in our language but only in its own, and that we need to start all over again, on a new continent, learning the strange syllables one by one.”

“I feel as though I stand at the foot of an infinitely high staircase, down which some exuberant spirit is flinging tennis ball after tennis ball, eternally, and the one thing I want in the world is a tennis ball.”
Annie be talking about Holy Spirit, streams, tennis balls, and eternity.
Put this down for nearly a year, and it’s been delightful to return to—in this season, particularly.
