I don’t know why it’s taking me so long to realise but unfortunately Murakami’s writing is quite compromised by the translation process. You could make this case for many authors as any translation is always going to be very different but there’s been several times in this collection where the story is saying something profound and it isn’t quite able to get there in the English version at least.
