This book is comparing a modern day great against an old time great. (Baseball) The setting is the world of baseball and it takes place from now to the past around 100 years. It affects the plot because it provides a place for the author to talk about baseball.

Certain players have held personal or group records of a certain action in baseball, such as most career home runs.
My prediction is that it will be difficult, yet possible to break any of these historical records.
