The opening story was not it. I've read 2 short stories by NK Jemison so far and I am just not on the train. I don't know why? Maybe I need to temper my expectations. I'm holding out for another short before I take the plunge and read the big one. I want to be on the train. 3rd time could be the charm.

I was trying to figure out why I had a random 2017 issue of Uncanny Magazine on my to-read list when I discovered that some well-meaning editor turned the entry for 'Fandom for Robots' into an entry for the magazine issue, with the editor-in-chief listed as the first author. This is obvious if you look at the reviews, which are primarily for 'Fandom for Robots', with little mention of the other stories.

Open the drawers of Items We’ve Let Touch Us Because Someone Just Like You Said It Would Make Us Well. The hooks and saws, the foul tastes and that stuff that made us gag and didn’t make us any better. You all wrote neat words down about each experiment anyway and that made you better.
