Last part deals w merger w US Airways, supported by labour but blocked by DOJ on anticompetitive grounds. Book was great for research, but meandering. Kennedy should write a memoir. He paints himself very sympathetically. I'm not sure what it wants to be. Almost creative non-fiction. But I don't know the conventions of this genre. I've read accounts of twitter etc. from biographers but not w the author as character.

lol the pilots really want to get into the profit-sharing scheme. this part is pretty boring. US Airways wanted to merge with AA and it was like they had to entertain it just in case but no one really want to merge. They have to prove that the profit of synergy outweighs the cost of dissynergy. I didn't even think dissynergy was a word.

AA borrows fr Citibank against future flyer miles 4 fast cash + to stay above a certain line. Ppl want legroom+ (pitch) but won't pay. Aging fleet replaced, which usually elates labor, pilots > captain. But this time AA still in 3 simultaneous labor spats. Tried to wait out airlines who filed after 9/11, for their labor costs to up. Ch11 bankruptcy. Arpey resigns + feels it's a moral failing to screw labor w/Ch11.

felt bad when CEO arpey told gary, i'm going to forgo my $$ to appease labour. Gary says it's unfair + sets a precedent. it says "we were wrong," the payments aren't bonuses, but part of the profit-sharing plan. execs need to be retained, but labor doesn't see it that way. AA didn't make enough to trigger the profit-sharing for non-mgmt. not arpey's fault. pilots go cray + blame mental health issues on the execs.

Couldn't get my hands on Glory Lost And Found so this will have to do. Written by the general counsel of American Airlines. I'm trying to figure out from a pilot perspective what he would be thinking of the board, of concessions, of unions, etc. AA nearly files for bankruptcy and the flight attendants and pilots agree to concessions only to find that the "officers" have clauses for fat bonuses. the CEO resigns.
