The general thesis, that modern Europe was an emergent property of the administrative subdivisions of Imperial Rome, brought about by Providence through the organisational structure of the Catholic Church, is brilliant. Doubly so since Gibbons is cringe.
Not sure how much I buy the idea that the title of 'Rex' meant little to the Romans, however, given that early imperial titles were explicitly meant to reject it.
