Chapter 3 is really good.
J.C. Catford (pg 35): a texts meaning is the function of the relationship between the text and its context. Translation cannot carry meaning, but simply replace it with something equivalent.
Polysystem of literary theory
Pg 39: hermeneutic school of translation (George Steiner)
Need to reread translation as an act of recontextualisation

A bit dry so far, and not too interesting. A couple of points worth noting:
- art or science?
- languages express and shape cultural reality
- translation competence is mediating between two languages
- translation is context and situation dependent
It also got me thinking about how translators are responsible for the manipulation of form in the new text which greater increases their artistic input and control.
