Status Updates From There There

I read that the brain stem is the basis of consciousness, and that the tongue correlates with the brain stem almost directly, and so eating is the most direct path to getting the feeling that you’re alive.

Whose belly hurts

It grabbed me right away, but every chapter introduces a new pov character and jumps around in the timeline, so I found myself getting easily distracted during the last few chapters. Hopefully, I'll remember who is who and what's what, by the time these random characters converge into one story.

We came to know the downtown Oakland skyline better than we did any sacred mountain range, the redwoods in the Oakland hills better than any other deep wild forest. We know the sound of the freeway better than we do rivers, the howl of distant trains better than wolf howls, we know the smell of gas and freshly wet concrete and burned rubber better than the smell of cedar or sage or even fry bread […]
