so basically what i got so far is that they didn’t want to legitimize slavery or state anything about “property in man” because it would have been against the fundamental and natural rights of human beings.
but then on the other hand, they had a hard time being very aggressive against slavery, even though it went against what they wanted America to stand for…
some things just aren’t that hard.
