GREAT EXAMPLE: SAS, SPSS, STATA and Excel discussion.

For the stats pro, SAS. For other limited uses, othered besides Excel. For the basic b!tch use, play with Excel. Unless it is for project management and/or financial analysis, then Excel is great.

PLEASE for the love of mankind STOP talking about quantitative ANYTHING. You don’t know enough about it, your discussion is confusing and/or inaccurate AND you just devolve into “look at tools you can use”.

Seriously

Just

STOP

Chapter 10 ranks as the most awkwardly written chapter in this book. Some useful information but, overall, read like a tech manual at times and went too deep in the “algorithmic weeds”.

Chapter 9 is a good source of information for finding good sources of data. Chapter could have been about 50% shorter without all the specifics about data sources.

Too much focus on advantages and not enough on disadvantages. Also, deeper thinking on some advantages would lead to additional disadvantages. For example, no transcribing of data from online surveys is counterbalanced by the need to properly define codes (and other important key phrases, etc) prior to release.

The chapter gets into the “fuzzy” part about now. It is almost as if the authors don’t have someone to read the chapters and then find a way to strengthen the areas that are not in the authors’ wheelhouse(es).

Also, some of the statements discussing asking follow-on questions in “real time” (my term) seem to contradict earlier statements about keeping to the IRB approved processes.

Author came across as a tad defensive when discussing “…Limitations of Research Using Qualitative Data”. Just the facts, please.
