Her hotdog bun description. LOL I told my husband this evening, “Don’t toast my bread. It’s fresh enough to have finger imprints where it’s touched . You’ll kill that wonderful tenderness if you toast it. He laughed. He doesn’t understand my love for squishy bread.
That makes me think of… Ever squished a piece of super fresh bread into a tiny condensed ball and then eaten it? It’s pretty wonderful.

OMG. Carla mentioned White Lily flour. It is the best flour. Was the best flour.
I still miss it. I miss their muffin mixes, too.

First time EVER in my life that I’ve seen my family’s way of using bacon drippings in cornbread including heating it in the skillet and dumping it into the batter.
Nu sugar in my family though. Sweet cornbread is yellow and entirely different for us.
This book and Carla? The real deal.
The South is a mix of a lot of heritages and races. A big melting pot. I was raised on a lot of the same recipes as Carla.

The collard greens recipe is great… The only thing Carla didn’t mention is you have to wash & rewash collard greens etc to make sure they aren’t gritty before you cook them. Seriously wash and wash and wash again.

The deviled egg is exactly how Mammy (my great grandmother) made them except no olive oil and there MUST be a dash of apple cider vinegar.
In other words, Carla’s recipe is the real deal.

The introduction was hard for me:( I absolutely adore Carla Hall. I’m all for celebrating one’s heritage and talking about the struggles. I am a Southerner, too. Except I’m white. My great-grandmother taught all the generations after her to cook- wonderful food with soul and love. I just didn’t expect to be hit with the “only my race” because Carla Hall always seemed to love everyone and all races.
