Although Eckert uses some language that isn't acceptable now, e.g. words for native women and people of color, he does so in the context of reporting what people actually wrote at the time. I am pleasantly surprised by his refusal to adhere to the "settlers good/natives bad" whitewashing so common in histories written in his time.

My second attempt at this brick of a book. It's not that it's badly written or uninteresting; it's that the information is so densely packed it becomes exhausting. Despite the narrative style, this is not fiction. Eckert relied on a vast number of documents to create an accurate picture of the events along the Ohio River in the late 1700s. Even dialogue is extrapolated from actual reports.
