Excellent atmospherics. Gosh during the ten years that Simenon didn’t write any Maigret books, because he thought it was over, had Maigret retire from the PJ and move with Mme. Maigret to a Loire countryside cottage, because there was that very long gap in the writing in the 1930’s, well, somehow his writing improved. From writing some romans durs during those years? Who knows how come?
