Much too long of a book to finish. The case itself is a fascinating study of unhealthy relationships, but the procedural elements following the murder become ridiculously redundant after a while. It felt like a lot of extraneous information was thrown in for no significant reason. I resorted to skimming after a bit and I just had to DNF by the time I was barely halfway though.

It is also absolutely insane that she was allowed to work out of the station that investigated Sherri‘s murder. TWICE. And that she got to work the morning shift where hardly anyone was on duty and she was the ranking officer. Of course she messed with the murder book. But the detectives in charge of the investigation definitely helped her by not doing their jobs.

How nice of her dirtbag husband to show up & read an impact statement abt how he can’t cope w/ this & he’s praying for peace to help him “…endure the daydreams about a world where Sherri is still with us, & this pointless tragedy never occurred.“ He could’ve told the police everything from the start. He also could’ve not started hooking up with Stephanie again a couple years after she MURDERED HIS WIFE

Why the fuck was she allowed to retire? That means she gets her full pension. It is insane that she was not fired. But sure, LAPD is totally reformed 🙄

Why is the author including shitty black-and-white photos, not on picture paper, that are backlit and thus it’s almost impossible to actually see the faces of the people in the photo?

Surprise surprise, Sherri‘s shitty husband is still withholding evidence in 2009. No one will change my mind that he knew Stephanie did it, or at least had a very, very good idea that it was her.

John also definitely did not care that his wife was murdered. What a scumbag. I think he knew it was Stephanie and protected her. Why else wouldn’t he tell her parents Stephanie’s name? Why else would he not bring it up in much detail with the detectives?

… Sherri’s made one of her friends swear never to tell about Stephanie coming to see Sherri at the hospital and threatening her. And it took that other lady 11 years to call the police and tell them about it. What the actual fuck?

This whole thing is so fucked up. The detectives didn’t do a thorough job in documenting anything. John refused to tell Sherri‘s parents Stephanie‘s name and conveniently left out the fact that she should’ve been the prime suspect given their repeated sexual relationship before and after the murder. People who knew about Stephanie just sat around and waited for the police to call them. For some reason…
