Reading this again I can now better articulate what I hated about the sequel trilogy. Lyra is such a curious, intelligent, cunning, courageous main character, and in the sequels she has become boring. That is, granted, the point the sequel is trying to make, but it's not so much the character assassination that bothered me so much as the fact that she's no longer a protagonist that can carry a story at all.
