Wow just wow! 29/30/31 chapters have just been so good, so moving, so thought provoking. One of the best wedding scenes I’ve ever read.

“Nor had they roasted themselves for nothing. Lance looked and winked with conscious pride at the poached eggs, frizzled contorted rashers, and crisp toast, wherein he had had his share of glory; and Wilmet's pile of scones in their snowy napkin divided the honours of the feast with the rissoles.”

Onto Volume 2!

I mean what is a family of 13 children without drama? 😜😳

I absolutely adored chapter 12. Yonge’s writing about the glory and beauty of the cathedral and the singing and organ and acoustics is sublime! I felt like I was Geraldine in her perch carried away with it all! And I adore Lance’s slapdash enthusiasm and the madcap antics of Mrs and Master Harewood. Ah, but the foreshadowing… 😮

Chapter 10 is wonderful. So funny! The Underwood boy antics remind me so much of the Wouldbegoods. But please stay Mr Audley!! 😢

'What seems a wreck need not be really one,' said Mr. Audley. 'It may be the very way of returning to the right course. And by and by we shall see our Master standing on the shore in the morning light.’

Oh dear!! The last sentence of chapter 9 indeed! 😳

Just give me a time in my life where I can say, like Lancelot Underwood: “My eyes! what a sight of parsons!” and I will be happy. 😂😂

Up to chapter 8!

Mr Underwood’s relationship with his daughter Geraldine (known as Cherry) reminds me so much of Mr Grace’s relationship with his second daughter Sarah in The Four Graces by DE Stevenson. I think it very likely that Stevenson read Yonge. Her characters do usually seem to be Anglican.
