I really enjoyed this. I’d read Gaskell’s North and South years ago but didn’t realize they were the same author. The BBC adaptation is very well done, too. It reminds me somewhat of The Mitford Chronicles, just day to day life and quiet humor.

'It is very pleasant dining with a bachelor,' said Miss Matty softly, as we settled ourselves in the counting house. 'I only hope it is not improper; so many pleasant things are!' (p56)

'she would have despised the modern idea of women being equal to men. Equal indeed! she knew they were superior.' (p36)
