An account from one of the prison camps on the far east. One of the mothers from the previous books goes to the medical camps outside of Stalingrad to see her son after his surgery. He does not recover.

Letter from a Ukrainian grandmother to her son back in Russia. The Germans put her in a ghetto and she believes she is going to die soon. There’s some talking between Russian officers over promotions and how even the children of Party leaders are fighting in the war.
