and see those themes myself. This is a book I really struggle with. It’s boring to read, and I can’t see the forest for the trees. But there wasn’t much to help me here before she turned back to politics. I wanted sound theology to help me shape my worldview, but what I’m getting is a lot of her worldview and very little Word. Idolatry of self.

Chapter 2 fell flat, too. I felt like I was reading a political blog rather than getting theological exposition. Starts with another instance of abuse of scripture, but instead of digging into context and explaining why that use is wrong (it is), the reason seemed to be “because I don’t like it.” She did give an interesting overview of the themes of Leviticus, but didn’t do much to explain how to read it

Instead, I will be cautious going forward because there is too much emphasis on self above Truth. Particularly troubling is “We trust that God is coming to a decision through us.”

God had a meaning in His words. Why would this meaning change with each generation? How can you bemoan false interpretations in prior generations if God has not made up His mind yet?

15 pages to say that our own histories and experiences bias how we read the Bible. Along the way, I learned that she has big name schooling and the privilege of attending conventions and taking sabbaticals to recharge at monasteries. I got no answers for how all of the hard parts of the Old Testament fit into the greater gospel story. No caution to consider the context and audience of God’s Word.

Chapter 1 is about the author’s feelings. Look how woke I am. Look how guilty I feel (but ignore my inaction). She quotes a verse and bemoans how generations prior took it out of context to abuse others, but fails to put it in proper context herself. I expected to see how the Old Testament points to Christ, but this is just the author’s rambling about her own emotions.
