Part Three done. The jump in time has diluted my sympathy, but selective sympathies persist. I'm beginning to question Christopher’s motives regarding his newly acquired role. At another level, I'm relieved his past is finally guiding his actions to aid the story’s concrete activity. It feels as if the role of detective has been transferred to the reader. Where are you taking us, Ishiguro?

Part 2 done. The unease is no longer merely in memory but spilling into the plot; no longer only psychological but now also ethical. What once felt like arrogance now reads as a firm resolve undermined by fear. Ishiguro has complicated both Christopher’s familial ties and his epistemic reliability as the narrator. Still, Ishiguro weaves me into sympathy for our protagonist, albeit a sympathy that feels reluctant.

The narrative texture of Christopher’s memory has thickened immensely. While the pacing feels slow, I sense Ishiguro’s deliberate control and that the story is gathering momentum. I was especially struck by how Ishiguro explores our childish tendency to justify fear through delusion and fantasy. I'm curious to see how this theme will deepen and play out in the evolving relationship between Christopher and Sarah.
