Chapter 5 - Aesthetic Judgement

The chapter on Vocal Registers is so valuable.

As part of the Smartypants challenge (non-fiction on Art, Music or the Performing Arts), I’m going to push for the next two weeks to work through this seminar work by my late teacher and mentor. It is dense and I want to understand EVERYTHING, so I doubt I’ll finish, but this will keep me on track.

Rereading this book is so valuable.

I’m quite sure didn’t understand much the first time I read this. I understand much more this time. It’s a lot to take in though.

I heard most of these things out of Reid’s own mouth over the years I studied with him, but now that I have been teaching and using these principals as I have understood them, I realize that my understanding has only scratched the surface and while my application of them has not been wrong, it’s been, let’s say, more intuitive than conscious. I’m looking forward to applying them more consciously now.

Oh, Cornelius, you sure did know how to cut through the crap. Each sentence is so dense, though!!

This is a reread, but certainly worth doing. Always inspired by this great man’s research and work in the pedagogy of voice.
