"'I told him within the next few years, he may have another grandchild. What do you think?'" (217) reviving one last gasp of indignation to say DUDE FLOATED THE IDEA OF HAVING ANOTHER CHILD WITH HIS FATHER IN LAW BEFORE MENTIONING IT TO HIS WIFE, WHAT THE ACTUAL

GIRL WHAT. YOU SKIP OVER TELLING THE DAUGHTER ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP AND JUST make it fair accompli in the epilogue. I have run out of caps lock energy. And all other energy.

Also, "Daniel, we haven't known each other long" is basically the summary of this book. Also also, him describing her having the biggest heart just makes me think "aw, I bet it pushes on all her organs" because Brooklyn nine nine

"'Daniel, we haven't known each other long ... Yes, I'll marry you'" (213). Ok, him going from "it's too complicated to process how I feel now" to "I know and must tell her!" in the space of three pages and a conversation I could accept--some conversations do cause paradigm shifts. But then a marriage proposal and acceptance 2 pages later? That is a bridge too far

"Trying to find out exactly what else was in Lydia's head, he said without judgment, 'So you're going back to Alexandria and forgetting about the girls again?'" (209) bahahahahaha "without judgment" my ass

"Daniel's view of Allen had been distorted ever since the affair. They'd been more than partners before that" (209). Um. I'm aware the next sentence is "they'd been friends", but there's a line break between them in the book and in that line break my brain...wandered

"Emma knew exactly what she had to do. She couldn't separate a mother from her children.… As soon as she settled down the three P's, she'd pack" (207-208). What. The jump in logic here, particularly when the intervening text makes it sound like she's just going to help Lydia get to know the girls...what.

"He asked Lydia, 'Didn't you ask her before you had it cut?'

'Why would I ask her? She's only seven. I know what looks best around her face'" (206). Okay so mom is also insane here, but that doesn't mean Emma is right to be hurt about not having a commitment from her employer slash lover when the mother of his children is there

"Extreme pleasure shook them both until Emma forgot to listen to his response. However, as they lay side by side again in the afterglow, she was unsettled by the fact that he hadn't said he loved her, too" (204). But... you just said she forgot to listen..but..but it's...gahhh

"Daniel took a bite from the same strawberry and laid the stem on the dish. Then he took her in his arms and kissed her. He tasted like chocolate and strawberries and the future" (202). Yeah okay sure but the book ends in 15 pages and your daughter still doesn't know that you and the nanny are boning

"The sitting area, with a mahogany-finished sofa, love seat and chair" (201) I had to look up what a mahogany finished sofa was because I was picturing a sofa with cushions that had a thin layer of wood covering the covers. After looking it up, I am no closer to having answers. If it was mahogany the color, why the hyphen? One of the many mysteries of this book

"Seeing as she was at a loss, Daniel explained, 'Pippa, I want you to get to know your mom while you have the chance. I don't know if she's going to stay. I don't think she knows if she's going to stay. And Emma can't make promises about leaving that she can't keep'" (198). I'm so confused by this. The locket went missing b4 Lydia showed up, so that's not why Pippa stole it. How. Are. These. Things. Related.

"She could easily see that Daniel wasn't ready to make any type of commitment to her" (178). Girl you've known him for less than a MONTH and his ex wife just came home to visit his daughters for the first time since she's left, get a GRIP

"'If my father heard that gossip, he'd be so disappointed in me. He'd tell me I should move out for propriety's sake'" (147). How would he find out?? You live in a small town in North Carolina and he's in Pennsylvania. Also, HOW IS WHAT HER FATHER WOULD FEEL LIKE RELEVANT?? He has not been mentioned for pages and pages till now

"'You can tell the sisters really care about this house. Look at those flower boxes.'

Emma was speaking of the flower boxes under every window that were all decorated with burgundy-painted wood shutters.

'I love the etched-glass windows on the wood front door,' she added.

Daniel noted another car was parked on the gravel" (113-114). Why tf is this made into a one side conversation and not just description

"'They've been petting her, watching her nap, playing games on their electronic devices while they keep her company'" (63). Ah yes, those popular electronic devices that the kids are playing with these days. I'd assume this was an attempt to avoid brand naming, except that there is consistent reference to Emma's (non branded) tablet.
