the first paragraph talks about the diffrent ways to measure temperature and that due to diffrent manufacturing of glass the stuff would show diffrent. Also any material could be used to measure temperature because any liquid expands when heated. But water could not be used because when it is below 0 degrees it would freeze and expand.
