Adam, an artificial intelligence breakthrough of Alan Turing's, is purchased by lackluster but curious Charlie. Charlie's girlfriend Miranda and he give Adam his personality. The trio become a closeknit family socializing Adam until he and Miranda have a one-night stand. McEwan cleverly involves the three in ensuing money, rape and child abandonment schemes.
