In chapter 19, Jabez Moorehouse laments his fate as a tenant farmer, saying he could have been a preacher, judge, congressman. He could have learned to fiddle. But all his life, he's been digging in the dirt and digging in the dirt is all he'll ever do.
Just about everyone seems to be living a wasted life here.
