They spent their lives taking from others, so now even their sense of self isn’t theirs to keep. Dante meets Vanni Fucci, who doesn’t repent. Admits the crime, curses God, and walks straight into his punishment again. Just defiance. This isn’t about mistakes—it’s about what repeated choices do to you.

Canto 23 trades chaos for control. The hypocrites walk in slow circles wearing gold cloaks that shine on the outside but are lined with crushing lead. Dante meets Catalano dei Malavolti and Loderingo degli Andalò—men trusted to bring peace who instead used the role for power. Then he see worse: Caiaphas lies crucified on the ground, forced to bear the weight of everyone else—the ultimate irony.
