And that was Ephesus (AD 431). The book ends now with Chalcedon (AD 451), and the authority of the bishop of Rome is confirmed, from Clement in the first century and ever after.

And now coming up to Ephesus (431).

And that was the eastern Council of Constantinople (381), which was later ratified by Rome to be a general, 'ecumenical' council. The whole period was dominated by the great Roman pope S. Damasus. Now, the book moves on to the times of S. Augustine of Hippo.

And coming up to Constantinople I.

Past the Nicene and Sardican canons (early fourth century), and it's clear that the bishop of Rome had a juridical government especially over Alexandria, but certainly generally, by an old custom.

Cyprian of Carthage, seen by some as a champion of the independence of bishops from Rome, is (startlingly) a Catholic.

Past the Holy Father S. Clement and S. Irenaeus, now at the Holy Father S. Victor. The authority of Rome is obviously derived from the Apostolic era. This book is a bit of an apologetic by an English author countering modern claims, including by protestant Anglicans.
