It’s sad how Shawn abused her so much in the beginning of the book. Due to hike being bipolar, it leads to him reacting to the smallest things such as “bending her wrist in an awkward like fashion” to the point where it threatens a fracture. Why would someone want to live like this when it would be so much easier to live like everyone else?

When reading this book, I’ve been asking myself the same questions. Why does this family use religion as an excuse for literally everything?
When it come to doctors, her dad doesn’t let them go to them because he states that “the doctors will kill you” and he prioritizes religion rather than real solutions.

A very interesting start to this book. This family is sort of an off the grid family when it comes to identity, they do not obtain important/needed documents such as: medical records, school records, or birth certificates( or delayed birth certificates ). I think this is interesting due to the fact that this could contribute to more problems in the future for this family when it comes to identity or documentation.

I’ve noticed changes in the authors style, she is descriptive when portraying settings and events in the beginning of the book such as,“Every morning, my family sat around a large table of reworked red oak and ate either seven-grain cereal, with honey and molasses,or seven grain pancakes”.The author is being very descriptive when portraying this scene. This caught my attention on her writing style.
