And I am left wondering what is the scent of roses and vanilla?

Since the author left their HEA to the last two or three pages, chasing her down before she decamped to Buenos Aires , an epilogue was essential. Her first dinner party as a Duchess, a roaring success. Fabrication to the ton about a backstory, and Presto, unacceptable bride.

This woman, Ellingsworth said, waving his hand at her, as polished as a gem, the very picture of gentility… She’s a… A…
A swindler. Cassandra filled in for him. And one time pick pocket.
Langon… I don’t believe it. You’re having us on.

And there we have the dénouement

The steps were falling down like a mouthful of rotten teeth
Eva Leigh has a command of the narrative that balances out complaints. Some of her sentences sing loud, and for this we forgive much

No one lingered on the curb or leaned out of windows. An air of loneliness hover over the packed earth and strung between buildings like a cobweb
Complaints about the author have been excessive and repetitive sex, but this title has excessive angst and lowlife. I will be glad to reach the end

No one who grew up in squalor ever truly forgot it

There is so much sadness, so much cruelty, so much corruption at high speed in our country and around the world that I like to read about the aristocracy, not the criminal element. So this has been a hard slog but I’m nearing the end, and of course it has an HEA

Deep in the criminal underground, the Lilly White Duke of Greyland has had an eye-opening education. Going back over all the titles I’ve read of this author, what surfaces is the purple, the gratuitous sex. And over abundance of angst. This has asked which I skip, and the sex was acceptable, thus far. But she has had many titles that I really loved. Uneven but a grateful reader

An unnecessary heavy hand on both the attraction, the betrayal, the desperation. The writing makes the reader desperate to get on with it

I am struggling to get into this one.
