History of so ugly and repetitive. I feel like the people in East Germany have spent all of history being herded over one border or another trying not to be "ethnically cleansed". What is it with men and their need for ALWAYS "more land" to colonize and "cleanse". And why am I using the word "cleanse" instead of kill?

This book started out being really hard for me to comprehend - like really over my head. But now that I'm halfway through, it's actually helping me to understand how nations are built and how we came to our current world of nationalism.

Now that we're getting closer to the world wars, it's starting to be less foreign to me. The first part was all about things I take for granted: how culture and ethnicity and language and all this other stuff is wrapped up in what we call "a county" or "state" or "nation".

This book is actually pretty far over my head, but I'm sticking with it.
