Kızın biri yatılı okuldan anlatıyor. Sessiz sakin ama kasvetli, sıkıcı okuldaymış. Sonra bir gün okula Frèdèrik adında bir kız gelmiş. Tuhaf biriymiş. Kimseyle konuşmuyormuş. Kibirliymiş de. Anlatıcı kız ilgisini çekmeyi çalışmış. Başarmış da... Böyle böyle akıp gidiyor roman.
