Why is this book so highly rated? And by people whose opinions I generally trust? This book reads like the first draft. I don't understand half of what is going on.

Ok the feeling that I am missing something hasn't gone away. I looked at book 1 to see if I should go read that, but the description doesn't lead me to believe it'll help... i just don't know guys! It feels like I missed the first 15 minutes of a movie and I'm trying to figure out who everyone is? Otherwise I like it I guess?
