I'm sure there is a reason why the narration continuously shifts from the protagonist Quinn to other people (who will be involved in the crime, I suppose), but really I find this distracting. I'm much more interested in Quinn. I also find that this is slowing down the pace of the novel in a considerable way.

Starting off a little slow, but I'm loving the style and the characters

Quinn was half-hypnotized by the beams of the car’s headlights, which seemed to form the way ahead just a second before it was needed. [driving in blackout conditions outside London]

Quinn had got the sense of how time for men at war is parcelled out into blocks in which they are safe, if bored, and blocks in which they might die. [observations throughout this novel about daily life in Britain in the opening weeks of WWI ring true to nonfiction accounts I have read previously]

“The enemy are barbarians. Be in no doubt. The fairer sex is in peril. Purity must be defended. Every man who can must answer the call. To fight. Men’s duty is to fight. Women have a duty too. To urge them on to the fight. The answer, white feathers. Show them the feathers. Shame them into fighting.” the women were given this task by civic, religious and military leaders

“So he who would join me in the fight against Satan, must join also in the fight against Germany. It is the same fight.” Here at the beginning of WWI in Britain, the campaign for enlistments is working with preachers who present the war as a necessary, a holy war.
