I love this part simply because it's less bleak and also talks about my university! Interesting to know my department's history way back in the 60's. Also, living vicariously through Shirley's descriptions of her time there.

It's interesting how both this book and Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye talk about Shirley Temple as the ideal little girl. I mean, both books are from wildly different backgrounds and yet share the same insecurity thanks to Shirley. That kid must have a huge impact around the world.
