Status Updates From The Mirror of True Womanhood

I almost lost it reading about the French Canadian Catholics and what they did for the orphaned Irish immigrant children. So heartbreakingly beautiful.

So far it’s a book for married women and home life but I know there’s stuff for those in my state of life further on so I’m sticking with it. Even the material that isn’t relevant to me is absolutely beautiful.

The husband knows that he will find no fire on his hearth, no warm food to cheer him, nothing but a dirty and untidy room, and a nervous and ill-tempered woman. So he will go, like his mates, to the tavern, to eat and drink with them there, and to go home at midnight, if he goes home at all" from 1877

Page 421 continued.. "There are no more meals in common, at least during the day; for sha has no time to prepare them. There are no fireside joys for her: how can she tidy and brighten things in her poor little home when she comes back to it after twelve hours of hard labor, harassed, exhausted, and only yearning for rest and sleep?" ... continued...

Leaving the house before sunrise and returning after dark, and tied down to her post in the workshop during the daytime, the working-woman is only in name a wife and a mother; she is degraded down to the nature of a factory hand..."
