Charles can't make any judgement of ppl, he just takes it as gospel what others tell him. Frustrating way to manipulate the reader.

Ugh, Sophia & the old woman are horrible. Roger is an idiot, Philip is ??? Married an actress, just funds her plays, doesn't work, couldn't afford to live elsewhere. The way Sophia is managing Charles is similar to the way she manages her mother.
