Newport doesn’t want you to see this as a detox, yet goes on to encourage you to stop using messaging apps to keep in contact with overseas friends claiming “these relationships can withstand a month of less frequent contact”. This directly contradicts earlier statements….

“[Twitter] scares me, not because I’m morally superior to it, but because I don’t think I could handle it. I’m afraid I’d end up letting my son go hungry.”

Seems like an exaggeration at first, but it’s something that I know I’ll always think about for a long time…
