Love the concept of this book: imagine if we could make a machine that could copy anything, in unlimited amounts. But, the beginning is weird so far and I am not enjoying how this concept is introduced to the world.

100 years later, all invention has halted. America has gone back to almost feudal times with just the strongest having gismo's and making everyone else toe the line. Slaves are 100 for each freeman, not necessarily black, and are called slobs. Writing so good I get pulled into the emotional depression of the story.

It is a duplicating device--It will duplicate anything--even another gismo, to operate, simply attach a sample of whatever you wish to copy to the left hand arm of the gismo, as shown. (There was a careful pen sketch in the margin.) Then press the switch, and a copy will appear attached to the right hand arm of the gismo..."
